Some, in fact many, versions of saslauthd have some sorts of bugs in them
that are causing this. The next release, if we can ever get the time to
push it out, has some cron jobs to check for this at a couple different
levels and restart it. However, I just don't know when we'll get the time
to do that at the moment. Hopefully soon because of a recent hire.
Anyway, I'd recommend you set up your own cron job to just "service
saslauthd restart" (or similar) it periodically, say hourly, in the
meantime.
