Just a follow up:

Everything works fine if I use imap. I suspect the problem has something
to do with Apple Mail's squirrely setup procedures (for example, if you
do not want to use SSL you have to let the initial setup fail by a
timeout, then edit the account settings).

Unless you see something really obvious I wouldn't worry about it, sorry
for the noise.

The real problem is it can be hard to get 85-year-old users to change
their procedures :-)
