Can you login to dovecot  server with a mail client. (you can check the 
dovecot log i think)


I had this problem but it was just related to sending mail (sasl2 config 
issues)

Had to
cp /usr/lib/sasl2/smtpd.conf  /etc/sasl2/

that is where centos5 looks for the smtpd.conf The file contents was OK 
and didn't need any tweeking, just moving.
