Since you mention firewalling, I'd bet that you've broken the firewall
rules allowing connections to tcp port 5432.  "psql -d vpostmaster" doesn't
use a TCP socket.

Try reverting your changes and see if that resolves it.  You probably need
to allow local connections, as a guess.
