Just a tip ...
Do you use Debian or derivative ?
if so, try this  :

echo 'OPTIONS="-c -r"' >> /etc/default/saslauthd

echo 'MECH_OPTIONS="127.0.0.1"' >> /etc/default/saslauthd 

/etc/init.d/saslauth  restart

If don't  , forget it....
