I sent a reply, but sent it only to Sean, I think. (Sorry, Sean!).
After I migrated all the mail to the new location, set up the symlink,
and restarted everything the only thing that didn't work was
Squirrelmail with large numbers of emails.  This, however, seems to be
an unrelated problem with the conf.pl file of Squirrelmail.  I enabled
server side sorting and it seems to have fixed the problem.
