Thanks Scott. It's not a client side issue, I get the same problems
with Thunderbird. I'm pretty sure my Dovecot install is a little
broken, the restart script fails, and /etc/init.d/dovecot start and
stop work, but silently with no output on the terminal.

I used your instructions to generate a cert, so that the CN was the
same as the DNS name for the mail server. I figured out how to
install the cert on the Windows XP workstations, as Outlook doesn't
have an option to permanently accept the cert:

Convert the cert to DER format:

openssl x509 -in /etc/ssl/certs/server.crt -outform DER -out mycert.der

Put the mycert.der somewhere the Windows clients can download it it
then run the following on each workstation:

Start>Run>mmc
File>Add Remove Snap-in
Add>Certificates>Add>Computer Account>Next Finish
Expand "Certificates (Local Computer)"
Right click "Trusted Root Certification Authorities">All Tasks>Import
Next
Browse to the cert location, change file type to "All files *.*" to see it.
Next
Finish

So from my clients POV the problem is solved. I'm still worried that
my dovecot install is a little flaky but thank you so much for your
help!
