I had a somewhat similar problem, though I wasn't getting your  
specific error messages, I was getting occasional timeouts from vpm- 
vfpolicy.

There were several problems, but the major one turned out to be that I  
was running an older version of clamav which apparently had some bugs  
- scans were taking 10 minutes or more and once each CPU was busy  
running clamscan the system was pretty well hosed.

I'd make sure you are running the latest version of clamav. Have a  
look at top's output and see what resources and for how long your CPU  
is being utilized. If you see clamscan taking many minutes that may  
well be your problem.

Your problem may well be something totally different, but I thought  
I'd pass along my experience.
